United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM)
Integrated Strategic Planning & Analysis Network Modernization (ISPAN)
Missile Graphic Planning System (MGPS)
Fortran to C++
History: United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) Integrated Strategic Planning & Analysis Network (ISPAN) integrates data from space-based, ground-based, and airborne sensors to alert commanders of potential threats. The Missile Graphic Planning System (MGPS) is one planning tool operating within ISPAN. The Software Revolution, Inc. (TSRI) was a member of the Lockheed Martin (LMCO) team bidding on the ISPAN modernization program. TSRI demonstrated the feasibility and benefits of its fully automated software modernization capabilities.
Challenge: The demonstration for USSTRATCOM took place in Nebraska at a LMCO Secure Information Facility (SCIF) near Offutt Air Force Base by LMCO personnel with appropriate security clearances. To successfully perform the demonstration, LMCO required training on TSRI's JANUS™ software re-engineering tool set and remote assistance from TSRI software engineers. The ISPAN demonstration began by transforming 80,000 lines of FORTRAN from the MGPS module into C++. This fully automated transformation was followed by clean compilation and linkage. The I-SPAN demonstration continued with automated complexity assessment and complexity-driven re-factoring operations. Finally, JANUS™ was used to assess the modernized module, illustrating its capability for automated generation of "To Be" UML documentation.
Result: In December of 2003, LMCO personnel carried out a highly successful demonstration of TSRI's JANUS™ tool set and automated approach to software modernization. TSRI prepared the tool set, the operating system, and all necessary supporting software on CD-ROMs to be hand carried into the non-network environment of the LMCO secure facility. In the final demonstration it took only 20 minutes for LMCO engineers to apply JANUS™ and automatically transform the 80,000-line FORTRAN test sample into C++.
The TSRI/Lockheed Martin pilot demonstrated the low risk, highly efficient software modernization capabilities of TSRI and its JANUS™ tool set. LMCO received high marks for risk mitigation. On August 26th, 2004, LMCO was awarded a $213 million Research & Development contract for ISPAN. Teaming with LMCO and other ISPAN related contractors, TSRI will target C++ and Java as it modernizes the legacy FORTRAN, Ada and Powerbuilder associated with ISPAN.
